Fictional Love

When I was in 5th grade, I had a huge crush on Harry Potter. While the other kids dressed up as historical figures for the wax museum, I donned a red robe, wore my mom's glasses, and wrote a speech about fighting Voldemort. This was a few years before the first movie came out, so not only was I perceived as a weirdo, people thought I was a loser for loving Harry Potter that much.

That's not the worst of it, though. I would also bring letters to school and show them off, saying they were from my boyfriend, Harry. If the horrible handwriting in the letters didn't let my classmates know I was the one that wrote them, then the crazed look in my eyes definitely did. I decided that my initials were J.E.P. and even got a few people to call me that. (Ironically, those are my initials now, though the P does not stand for Potter.) I told everyone at the end of the year that I was going to a Hogwarts summer school, and when fall came and I did not receive my letter from Professor McGonagall, I was heartbroken.

I was a weird kid. Obviously.

Until recently, I have only had a crush on one other fictional character: Gilbert Blithe.

I'm pretty sure it was only because Anne Shirley has red hair. The craziest I got with that crush was fast-forwarding through Anne of Green Gables (the movie and the book) to only watch (or read) the parts with Gilbert in them.

Now I have a new crush: Peeta Mellark.

I just finished re-reading The Hunger Games, and when I started reading Mockingjay, I got really bored because Peeta isn't in it very much. I even skipped about 30 pages because I got sick of Katniss whining and just wanted to read about Peeta. And I'm sure Ryan got sick of me saying, "Poor Peeta!" during the first two books. I'm really anxious for the movie, to see how well they portray my crush.

Am I crazy? Or do other people have crushes on fictional characters? And pleeeeease don't mention Edward Cullen, because that'll just make me feel crazier.

  1. Nope. You aren't weird because I am on the Peeta Train, too. Choo-choo! Other fictional crushes for me are Fred and George Weasley and Batman.

  3. I didn't have a crush of Harry Potter, But I was pretty obsessed with the books. I would write letters to myself from the characters in the book and leave them on my bed like an owl had left them there!

  4. I've always loved Wesley from the Princess Bride. In fact, when I was a tween, I found a recipe for a dessert called "sex in a pan." Since at that age I had no frame of reference, I renamed it "Wesley in a pan" and have made it many, many, many times. It is still just as yummy and wonderful as it was back then.

  6. You are so funny! And I couldn't agree more. I am totally in fictional love with Peeta. I don't think the guy they cast as him seems like a Peeta to me. I hope he acts like it. Only 1 month til the movie comes out. Thanks for the funny post:)

  7. Supergirl and Batgirl are my current ones. So yeah, I don't think you're weird at all.

  8. I carried a picture of Jonathan Taylor Thomas in my wallet when I was a preteen.

How does Ryan feel about you admitting this as a married woman? Pretty funny about your initials. At what point did you make the connection?
